I know somebody who is Iraq translating for the U.S. Army and is supporting his family here in the U.S. with the money he his making translating. He has been doing this for 6 years and I am wondering what will happen to him and others who are financially dependent on this war. Does Obama have anything planned for them or will they be left to fend for themselves when they return?

It will take months and months to even begin a withdrawal. . Yes, there will be economic repercussions. Iraq will have to use its oil revenue to develop jobs programs, and begin to govern itself and provide its own security.

So we should keep fighting this stupid war so people working for the army don't lose their jobs?

Obama will not pull the troops anytime soon,,he can't. there are too many factors involved..People don't seem to understand this.

they'll have to find a real job, most of them just do it to get out of debt since they make up to six figures. I mean honestly, do think we should just fight the iraq war forever so contractors don't lose their jobs? come on, you are being absolutely ridiculous

Translators don't need war to find employment.

The whole idea is to put jobs BACK in our country. So the Americans who are making a living in Iraq will be able to make a living in America where they belong!
8 :
Translators will have plenty of opportunities in the private sector as a newly independent Iraq develops its international business relations. Besides, our troops are currently filling jobs that Iraqi police and military could be paid to do.

exactly.....this is one of many questions that was ignored during the election...

so you think the war should continue so your friend and others have a paid job there? for goodness sake if you want your country to avoid a recession you must pull the troops out and concentrate on your economy.

Jobs like that are temporary by default based on their need. Other US translating work will likely be available, though probably not as lucrative (or high-risk). If they know how to manage their career properly they will know where to look for work, or have back-up plans. What did they do 7 years ago for work?

It's not going to happen overnight, the current plan calls for two to three year scale down, which will give people time to look for other jobs. Don't forget that the war was only supposed to last six months, it was never intended to be long term employment.

They'll just move on to the next place.

I would be much more concerned about all the people in Iraq who have helped the US because they are the first ones the terrorists will harm (video tortue, or killing and displaying the corpse) so the world will know that the terrorists are winning because the west has no stomach for a long war.
